Hair Stylist - Tazmin
Overall i was happy with the finish as there is clear evidence of different textures in the hair featuring the frizzed Elizabethan texture and also the shiny straight hair which is modern. The bow also makes it modern. To improve my design I would curl the rest of the hair instead of leaving it straight brushing it out to show the comparison between Elizabethan tight curls and modern loose beach curls. Tazmin was great at taking directions and she learnt how to make a bow which we had not been taught in class before which shows skills and ability. I was very pleased with the texture she gave my hair because the frizz made it look very Elizabethan. Tazmin also did a great job at the padding as in the previous practise it was uneven it showed that practise is very important. To improve Tazmin should section of the hair more equally creating more of a sharp line especially at the half up and half down area. Also the baby hairs could be brushed away better with the use of hair gel. Although the bow is messy I like it as it makes the whole look more contemporary and modern.
Timed Assessment

-Bun
For my final timed assessment the one thing I found that went well for me was time management, I finished just on time which is what I was aiming for as frizzing the hair can take a lot of time. I was also pleased about the fact that I was able to create a bun as high up as the design was which I found difficult in practise as her hair is short. To improve first of all I would start by practising creating buns on shorter hair as my practise was always done on long hair. I would also section off the pieces of the hair that was frizzed equally making which would make it look more Elizabethan since thats what the designer was going for. And lastly the half up half down section would also be sectioned off equally making it look neater and more professional. Overall this assessment taught me that practise is key and if i struggled creating a bun on short hair I should have met up with my partner more to practise which would make it perfect.
My partners design
Tazmins design
My partner has short hair which meant that padding would be very hard to create which is why she designed a large bun instead. The front of the hair was tightly pulled back into a bun with two plaits around it. The bottom section of the hair was frizzed and not brushed out which was very Elizabethan. There were also pearls added into the hair which again made it more Elizabethan.
The design showed clear contrast between Elizabethan and modern hairstyles due to the high fashioned modern bun with Elizabethan pearls in it and the frizzed hair however to improve my partner could add more texture possibly to the bun etc. crimping or frizzing which would take its simplicity away.
Final Modern Design
Final Modern Design
For my final design i used my previous two designs and improved adding more contemporary shapes such as a bow.
The front of the hair is extremely padded making it very high and large. Only the front of the hair is crimped and this is because I wanted to show a clear contrast between Elizabethan hairstyles and also modern hairstyles. This is shown through the large Elizabethan padding in the front with a contrast to the back with a bow shaped hair style.
Step by step -
Step 1 - Crimp the front section of the hair and tease it.
Step 2- Section three pieces of hair and create a french plait where the padding will sit.
Step 3 - apply the padding tightly onto the plait
Step 4 - bring over the padded section and pin it to the back of the head.
step 5- The hair that is left on the side needs to be tied up tightly leaving a thing strand of hair at the bottom.
step 6- create a box shape with the hair that is tied up
step 7- tight curl the strands of hair that is not in a hair the

Second Design Idea
Second Design Idea
For my second hair design idea I decided to go with the traditional hearted shaped Elizabethan padding. I also incorporated curls into the look which were then pinned on top of the padding. I wrote a step by step for my partner.
Step 1 - Crimp the whole head
Step 2 - Section the hair into two equal halves
Step 3- Create a french plait on both sides and happy padding
Step 4 - Bring the hair across the padding and pin it leaving a few strands in the front
step 5 - tight curl a few bits in the front and pin it onto the padding
If i used this as my final idea there are a few things that I would improve such as adding jewels to it possibly inside the curls to make it more Elizabethan looking. I would also get a gold or silver hair paint and have it sprayed all over the hair to make it look more contemporary. In my opinion this hairstyle looks more Elizabethan and less contemporary because of its simplicity which needs to be improved.
I wasn't pleased with the final look as it looked too Elizabethan with the crimped hair as I wanted a very contemporary look with an edge to it, which is why i changed my design. |

Modern Elizabethan Practise Design
Modern Elizabethan Practise Design
My first design idea
I practised my first design idea on Aine.
I started off with crimping the hair to create the thick Elizabethan textured hair.
Then i section of the hair creating a padding for a quiff at the front of the hair. I wanted the quiff to be a mix between an Elizabethan big padded hair and a high fashioned quiff. What made it Elizabethan was the texture and also the height, however to modernise it i sectioned off a thinner piece to create the quiff with which made it look more modern. Also another factor that made it Elizabethan was the curls as they were not brushed out and were right similar to Elizabeths hair. However at the same time i left some of the hair just crimped and brushed out which gave it a rocker edge to the hair look. I was pleased with the outcome as it showed clear contrast between modern and Elizabethan hairstyles however the padding needs to be improved as it was not even on both sides. Another factor that can be improved is the fact that it is too simple. For example adding jewels to the middle of the hair would make it stand out more.
Elizabethan Historical, shapes and structure examples
Elizabethan Historical, shapes and structure examples
We looked at recreating traditional Elizabethan hairstyles mainly looking at shapes and textures. A common Elizabethan hairstyle will include heart shaped padding on each side of the head with jewels in the hair with a curly/frizzy texture.
After crimping the hair and frizzing a few strands from the front I secured the padding into the french plait and put the hair over which created a big shape on her head.
For the back i twisted the hair and wrapped it over the pins, again securing it.
I found creating shapes difficult because I struggled keeping both sides of the hair symmetrical however with practise and a good use of parting with a comb it became more similar to each other.
The heart shape. Queen Elizabeth wore the heart shaped hairstyle a lot which decades later is still being adapted by famous fashion designers in catwalks.

Padding / Rats application
Padding / Rats application
Elizabethan hairstyles included a lot of padding to achieve the large shaped. The technique that we were taught included plaiting and a lot of pins.
Step 2 - if the hair is too long go back on itself until it is all laid flat against the head and pin it tightly.
Step 3 - pin the padding onto the plait until it is tight and does not move.
Step 4 - Bring the hair OVER the padding and pin it down tightly.
The complicated part about applying the padding is knowing how big the plait has to be because if its too small then the padding is going to be lose on the sides showing through the sides of the hair. To make this easier always measure the size of the padding with the plait to make sure they match!

Curling Hair
After a consultation with a client find out what type of hair they have to decide the heat setting on the curling wand. Spray the hair with heat protect.
Wrap the hair around the wand for 3-6 seconds then either let it go loose and for pin type curls use hair slides to keep the hair pinned.

Contemporary Portrait vs Elizabeth Portrait
CONTEMPORARY ELIZABETHAN HAIR VS ELIZABETHAN HAIR
Even to this day so many designers such as Chanel, Alexander Mcqueen, Vivien Westwood etc. are very much inspired by tudor hair. From he texture to the shapes and jewels that were popular in the Elizabethan era is still used now by the most famous designers in the world.
The Heart shape
The hair at Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2010 was very similar Queen Elizabeth's hair with the classic heart shaped hair style with a fashionable collar to go along with it.
WIGS |
This hairstyle from London Fashion week 2010, for Vivienne Westwood was similar to Elizabethan hair mainly because of the large wig with messy frizzed hair. |

Crimping and Frizzing hair
We were taught 2 different frizzing techniques which were crimping then brushing it out which is more of a modern look or the figure of 8th's frizzing techniques which was more similar to tudor times.
CRIMPING
To crimp the hair we take small sections and hold the crimped to the section of the hair for 3-6 seconds depending on the thickness of the hair then move down until the whole strand of hair is crimped. Brush it out and backcomb it if a big frizz is needed.
FRIZZING
To frizz the hair we take a small section of hair and a hair grip and wrap the section around the left side of the grip then the right and repeat until all of the hair is wrapped around and looks like a plait.
Then secure with a pin and go over it with straighteners to create tight curl. Take out the grips and brush the hair out for an extreme frizzed hair which was similar to queen elizabeths.

Hair Bow
H A I R B O W
To create a hair bow put the hair in a tight ponytail and on the third round of securing the hair band only pull half of the hair out and leave it in a bun. After separate the bun into two sections making it bigger and use the remaining of the hair that is facing the front to sit in the middle of the two sections that were separated from the bun and secure it with hair grips.
Buns and Braiding
P L A I T
First of all we brushed and detangled the hair then divided it into three sections as even as possible. Then we cross the left section into the middle section then cross the right section over the middle section as tight as possible and repeat till all over the hair is plaited.
F R E N C H P L A I T
Again separate hair into three equal sections and use the right strand over the middle and then the left to the middle. Then go back to the left section and add more strands of hair to that section and cross over to the middle. Repeat on the right side adding strands and continue with this technique.
B U N
To create a bun start of by putting all of the hair into a tight ponytail, after grab the hair in the elastic into sections and put it over the hair elastic and secure it with hair grip. To this to all sections of the hair until all is secured
then shape it as big or small as you want.
